Michael P. McHugh, 86, of Storrs, died on July 10, 2019 at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lackawanna, NY, and was raised in Baltimore, MD. He received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the Catholic University of America. After teaching at Howard University in Washington D.C., he joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut, where he taught classical languages, literatures, and mythology from 1968 until retirement in 1997. He translated several works of St. Ambrose in the series Fathers of the Church, and was an associate editor of The Encyclopedia of Early Christianity and a co-founder of The North American Patristic Society. He was active in The Classical Association of Connecticut, serving as its President 1985-1986, and in the UConn Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa as Treasurer for many years and President 1986-1987. He was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Storrs, serving as a lector and in other capacities, and was a former member of the board of the Campaign for Human Development of the Diocese of Norwich. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia A. McHugh of Storrs; two sons, Patrick McHugh and his wife Sharon of Cromwell and Peter McHugh and his wife Joy Fausey of West Hartford; two daughters, Norah Machia and her husband Anthony of Watertown, NY and Molly McHugh and her husband Chris Schmidt of Orford, NH; five grandchildren, Nicholas Machia and his wife Laura, Kevin and Katie Machia, Summer and Rayne McHugh. Michael’s family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday July 21, 2019 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on July 22, 2019 at 10:30am at St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel, 46 North Eagleville Rd., Storrs, with burial to follow in Storrs Cemetery.
