My condolences to Dan's family and friends. "Mr. Shea" was the best teacher I had while attending Tolland High School, (class of 78). He was tough, but fair. He had a positive lasting affect on me, as I'm sure he did on others. I've thought more about his wit and wisdom than any other educator I had at Tolland.

God speed

My deepest sympathy to Dan's family. I didn't know any of you but I knew Dan very well. We were adversaries in the 1970s, but not really. As a member and ultimately chairman, I represented the Tolland Board of Education and Dan represented the TEA during teacher contract negotiations. Dan was a firm negotiator, but we both understood the role of compromise and we never denigrated each other at the negotiating table, in the news media or elsewhere. We truly respected each other and we told each other on numerous occasions. Dan was always a true gentleman. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Shea was a favorite at Tolland High School. He was always tough but fair and challenged us to be our best academically and our best as people. I remember his classes fondly and strive to live up to him in the classroom.
My condolences to the family. Know that his spirit lives on in all those he taught.
Sincerely,
Doug Hutton

I never had Dan while I was a student at Tolland High. Later, when I came on as a young faculty member, we overlapped as colleagues for a few in years. In both cases, Dan was a legend.

He had a demanding, imposing veneer, but under that he was a pussy cat. Educators like Dan, with his personality and panache, are becoming an endangered species. He will be missed.

I remember Mr Shea fondly. I took his class, Contemporary Social Problems, at Tolland High, in 1976. It was the year I graduated. To me he was the epitome of what a good teacher should be. He was very funny and made the class fun and interesting. Mr Shea had a rapport with all of his students, no matter what walk of life they were from. He also seemed genuinely interested in us and showed us respect. I am sad to see he has let us, but pleased to have been one of his students.
