I was privileged to do a sabbatical under Ben's sponsorship in 1983 and return to Storrs 20 years later for his retirement Festschrift. Ben was a warm and endlessly supportive colleague, as well as genuine pioneer in the area of canid behavioral genetics. He laid the foundation upon which so many of us built.

If this is the professor who inspired Black & Latino students at the University of Connecticut to protest his (and his partner's) attempts to falsely document that Blacks were inheritantly inferior, then there are no kind words that can be said by this writer.

BH
I have some any wonderful memories of Benson and Pearl going back to the 1950s. Mayyou be comforted among the mourners of Zion, and may his soul be bound to the holy and pure souls in the highest heavens.
Love,

I first met Benson when I was 21. As an undergraduate, he invited me to work in his lab at the University of Chicago. He was for all the subsequent years my mentor, colleague, and friend. He was not only scholarly but also gracious in his support. I owe much of who and what I am professionally to him. Moreover, his innovative contributions will long have a decisive impact of the study of animal and human behavior genetics.

Exemplary in both his personal and professional lives, Ben was simply a good human being and a gifted scientist. I am proud of my part in the awarding of his Behavior Genetics Lifetime Award.

Benson was a great inspiration and mentor to me. I will always treasure his brilliant mind and help to me. Please except my sincere condolence to all of his wonderful family. Living in Tucson made it impossible to attend, wish I could have attended. Having recently lost my dearest husband helps me to better appreciate your personal loss.

It was with great pleasure to care for Benson as his nurse at Mansfield. I only wished to have known him better. What a full and beautiful life he lived, so much love from his daughters and caretakers, it was so very nice to see. You will surely be missed my friend.

Our hearts go out to Benson's family. May his memory be a blessing. He was Saul's friend and neighbor for almost 1/2 century and a colleague of Carol's Israeli brother-in-law for decades. We will miss Benson's insight, wit, and kindness.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. He was such a special person and was so influential in my husband,John's, life. Because of him and the move from the University of Chicago we were able to raise our 3 sons in Connecticut. I feel so privileged to have known him. Wishing you peace and comfort at this time, Judy, Debby and Faye and the whole family.

What a joy it has been to know Benson & Pearl as a child growing up in Chicago, along with Judy, Debby & Faye. We have years worth of shared sweet memories that will now be a blessing. Every year I looked forward to Benson's wonderful birthday parties at his home, and last year he even played the piano for us. What a remarkable human being he was. He will be very missed and his passing is a huge loss for so many people. His gifts were many, and like ripples in a pond, they keep on giving. So does love. It never ends, and transcends death. May his memory be for a blessing. Sending love and comfort to all he left behind.

I was so fortunate to have Benson as a friend and colleague. He was so quietly but deeply enthusiastic about his work and the work of others, caring to his students, open to new ideas, and always prepared to be a teacher/mentor. A life so well lived...

The world has lost not only a distinguished research scientist, but also a compassionate, humble and wise human being who in his quiet and gentle way provided family and friends strength and a sense of purposeful direction. Benson's passing is a deep loss in valley shadows, yet the celebration of a life well lived shines brightly on the peaks of the mountains. With love and respect to the entire family ~

Of course, we will always be grateful for Tewa and Miranda. But Benson meant so much more to us. We are grateful for our longstanding friendship and welcoming into his circle of colleagues in the world of canid behavior and genetics. Our exposure, thanks to Benson, to all things canid has been immensely enriching, rewarding and enlightening. It has provided us with opportunities and experiences that surely have guided the course of our lives. This has been invaluable in defining who we are/have become regarding our canid-related activities. Good-bye our beloved friend, our mentor.
