Shirley Stoney Obituary

Shirley Ann Smith was born December 10, 1944 to mother Carrie Smith and she resided in Okalona, Mississippi with grandparents Darlene and John Henry Smith.  Following suit to a common family tradition, Shirley ensued her interest and career in music.  Shirley always had a growing passion for singing.  Shirley graduated from Fannie Carter High School, then went on to obtain her associated degree at Okalona Junior College.  From there, Shirley moved to Tampa, Florida and there she met the love of her life, David Stoney, Sr.  They were united in marriage in December 1975, and she became known as Shirley Ann Stoney.  With this union they were blessed with three children. Upon moving to Willimantic, CT, Shirley became a member of Calvary Baptist Church and continued her love of singing as she joined the Golden Tone Singers and the Calvary Holy Ghost Evangelical Ministering Choir.  Shirley began her career in mental health at the Mansfield State Training School. She went on to further her education at Eastern Connecticut State University, where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.  She was employed by DMR Inc., Whole Life Inc., and ended her career at Natchaug Hospital.  Throughout her career her unwavering dedication and love towards clients, staff, and anyone who encountered her spoke volumes for her caring heart as well as her strong work ethics.  Shirley is predeceased by her mother Carrie Smith and beloved husband David Lee Stoney, Sr.  She leaves behind to mourn, children Shunta Weatherspoon, of San Antonio, TX, David Stoney Jr., Jameela (Shan) Stoney Edward; grandchildren, Millyhon Stoney, Joseph Weatherspoon all of Willimantic, CT, Benjamin Weatherspoon and Mackenzie Weatherspoon of Richmond, VA; sister Pandora Barnwell of New London, CT; brothers, Eugene Smith of Willimantic, CT, William Smith Jr. of Groton, CT.  Other loving family members, Patricia Pelatti, John Smith and Paul Smith of Willimantic, Ct.
