Robert Burgess Obituary

It is with sad hearts and fond memories we announce Robert "Bob" Lincoln Burgess passed away January 20, 2021, after a 5 year hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer.

Bob was born on November 10, 1961 in Willimantic, the son of Robert and Bernice Burgess. Bob is survived by his high school sweetheart, Martha Burgess.  They would have been married 38 years in June and she will miss his ability to always make her laugh the most.  Also feeling this loss are his children, Jason Burgess and Stacy Neff, as well as, son-in-law John Neff, countless friends, colleagues and bandmates.  Bob's greatest loves were the littlest members of our family, Brianna Lyn Burgess "Cookieface" and Alexandra Lincoln Neff, "Allie Cat".

Bob graduated from Windham Schools and attended the University of New Haven.  After graduating in 1983 from the CT State Police Academy's 92nd Training Class, Bob began his very successful career working at Troops D, C, and K, and as a Resident Trooper in Mansfield and Hebron.  He was also a member of the CSP Canine Unit and a detective in the CSP Gang and Narcotics Units, where he found his passion.  He was widely respected and gained many lifelong friends within the field of law enforcement.  He retired in 2008 after a 30 year decorated career as a Sergeant.

Bob found great happiness in music, especially funk. He was a talented drummer and throughout his life had the opportunity to play with many musicians. As a founding member of the Roadside Justice Band 37 years ago, his ability to entertain a crowd was second to none. Roadside Justice bandmates and their fans became our extended family.

From spending time with family and friends, whether playing band gigs, golfing, bowling, softball or watching the food channel, he lived life as large as it gets, and was the epitome of Work Hard...Play Hard.  His unique ability to bring people together and make us laugh until our sides hurt will remain in our hearts forever.

Bob's Doctors often referred to him as a Unicorn as he continued to exceed all medical expectations.  He was one of the strongest fighters we may ever know. He far surpassed his initial diagnosis and continued to impress his doctors with his strength and quick wit. We truly extend our heartfelt gratitude to the health care professionals that helped Bob and Martha throughout his battle.

His love will continue to be felt as we share the endless stories about him that make us laugh and cry.

Calling hours will be from 1:00 – 3:00 on June 26, 2021 at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic, and there will be a service for those who would like to attend at 3:00.  Bob’s family invites you to a celebration of life reception immediately following the service at The Sports Bar in North Windham CT.

The Burgess Family is pleased to share that they have established the Robert L. Burgess Memorial Fund.  Along with Bob's close friends, the family will host various annual events in Bob's honor with the goal of supporting pancreatic cancer awareness, aspiring musicians, and our local community.
