Phyllis Stone Obituary

Loretta Phyllis (Jones) Stone, 92, of Hampton, CT, the wife of the late and loving husband of 53 years, Walter Stone Sr., passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at Windham Hospital.  She was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 23, 1929, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Charlotte (Hayward) Jones.

Phyllis met the love of her life in 1952 and was married on October 3, 1953. They had a love story for the ages.

She spent her life working side by side with Walter Sr. on their dairy farm in Hampton raising their children – there were even times she drove the hay truck!  She managed the books, the meals and the spirit of the farm.  When her children were grown, she became the Tax Collector for the Town of Hampton, where she worked for over 35 years and forged friendships for life.

She had a very close relationship with her in-laws, Evelyn and Elmer, who treated her like their daughter from the moment she met Walter Sr.

Phyllis was a woman of deep faith her entire life. She was an active Member of Hampton Congregational Church for over 75 years where she taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and as an active member of the ladies aide; organizing events including Christmas Fairs, dinners, fundraisers, luncheons and more.

Phyllis was a Windham County 4H leader for over 20 years teaching sewing, cooking and leadership. She was very fond of this community and the 4-H camp holds a special place in her heart.

Phyllis was very fond of her many visits with family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, close friends and frankly anyone that knew her. Sharing stories and close moments kept her young and her family is forever grateful for the bonds she had with so many.

She loved her family, her church and her community and will be greatly missed by all.

Phyllis is survived by a daughter Ruth Costa and her husband Richard; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian, Spencer & Violet) Helble, Amy (Joe, Aubrey, Zach & Evan) Woznyk, and Joseph Costa; nieces and nephews from New Hampshire to Utah to Florida. Her niece Lori Mather was at her side helping her navigate the last few years.   She was predeceased by two sons, Walter Stone Jr. and Jimmy Stone and a brother Richard (Dick) Jones.

Phyllis’s family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, August 28, 2021 from 10:00am to 11:00am at the Hampton Congregational Church, 263 Main St., Hampton, with her funeral service beginning at 11:00am.  Burial will follow at the Litchfield Cemetery in Hampton.
