Norma B. Hawkins, of Brooklyn, CT, passed away on July 9, 2020. Born in Willimantic, CT on July 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Thelma Harris Balcom and Arthur L. Balcom. Raised in North Windham, CT, she married Winston Hawkins on October 11, 1947. Together, they raised a family in Mansfield Center, CT, where they were involved members of the community, and were especially active with The First Church of Christ in Mansfield. They moved to Creamery Brook Village, in Brooklyn, several years ago.
A graduate of Eastern CT State University, Norma was a former teacher in the Mansfield School System, and also was an assistant to the director of the CT Joint Council on Economic Education at the University of Connecticut.
Following retirement, Norma and Winston enjoyed 26 years of part-time life in Palmetto, FL, where they still have many friends. A lover of nature, reading, music, and spending time with friends, Norma took great pleasure in being with her family. In addition to her loving husband, Norma is survived by her children and their spouses: Christine and Arthur Dimock, of Woodstock Valley, CT, John and Kathleen Hawkins, of Mansfield Center, CT and Elaine and Keith Conners, of Riverside, RI; her grandchildren: Kevin Greene, Nancy Dimock, Abigail Dimock, Kim Mueller-Westerhoff, Matthew Greene, Jessica Lodge, Bradley Conners, Sean Hawkins, Kristen Conners and Patrick Hawkins; and her great-grandchildren: Marco Zavala, Kira Greene, Samuel Greene, Maxwell Greene, Ronan Lodge, Fiona Lodge and Genevieve Greene. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be planned at some time in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations in Norma’s memory may be made to The First Church of Christ in Mansfield, P.O. Box 36, Mansfield Center, CT 06250.
