Nancy Nuhfer Obituary

Nancy Louise Nuhfer, 88, passed away on January 10, 2024. She was born in Willimantic, CT on March 23, 1935, to Newton Burleigh and Louise (Dayton) Smith. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marshall T. Nuhfer, and her son-in-law, Alan P. Farrington.

Nancy is survived by her son Marshall A. Nuhfer (Jeanne), daughter Noreen L. Farrington (Alan, deceased) (Luigi Pillari), and her devoted partner Talivaldis Purvins. She leaves behind six grandchildren, Eric (Ashley), Kurt (Mandakini) & Brian (Kristine) Nuhfer and Garrett (Alison) Gervais, Joanna (Will) Moran, and Andrew (Lindsay) Farrington; and 16 great grandchildren that were loved and enjoyed.

Nancy grew up at the center of town in Columbia on a small family farm. Her passion was riding and showing horses and she won many ribbons doing so. She attended three of the one room schoolhouses in Columbia. Nancy was a member of the first class to graduate from Horace W. Porter School in 1949. She was later a graduate of Windham High School class of 1953.

In 1955 she married Marshall T. Nuhfer “Tink'' and moved to Columbia Lake where they brought up their two children. Nancy retired in 1992 after 24 years as a bookkeeper for the Columbia Board of Education. Sadly, her husband Tink passed away the same year. Nancy continued to travel to Florida, Virginia, and internationally for 24 years. Those years she sang and played her Omnichord in a bluegrass band, “Old Shades of Grass.” Her favorite pastimes, while either traveling or at home, were singing, sailing, boating, quilting, sewing, and enjoying time with her family at the lake and on her travels.

She was a lifelong member of the Columbia Congregational Church, where she sang in the choir and played in the Hand Bell Choir for several years. Nancy was also a member of the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary.

The family would like to thank the team of Hartford Healthcare at home and the Hartford Healthcare Hospice team. With special thanks to her full-time caregiver Latrice Whyte Good.
