Marvin Lewis Mitchell, 84, of Willimantic, CT husband of the late Ruby Lee Mitchell was called home on Monday, January 9, 2023 at UCONN John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, CT., surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 5, 1938 in Hollandale, MS. The son of the late Marvin and Darris (Welch) Mitchell, Sr.
Marvin was a member at Calvary Baptist Church in Willimantic, CT where he served on the deacon board. He found joy in Sunday Services listening to the choir and the message of the Lord. He was employed at General Dynamics (Electric Boat) for 28 years and after retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family. After retiring he enjoyed sitting at Cumberland Farms parking lot drinking coffee, eating his danishes and talking with the guys. With his caregiving nature, he also found joy in bringing his grandchildren to and from school and giving rides to others. He was taught the carpentry trade and took great pride in his work. With this knowledge he took great pleasure in working alongside his daughter Maryann and son-in-law Robert building and fixing things around the house. He also enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his children Mary Spruell and her husband Robert, Marvin III and his wife Briana, Georgia Mitchell, and Doris Mitchell, sisters Stella Hunter and Martha Mitchell, fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Marvin was predeceased by his wife Ruby Lee Mitchell, daughters Clara Bell Williams and Emma Mitchell, siblings William, George, Oscar, and Otis Mitchell, Bertha Hollis, and Clara Noble, sisters in law Emma Stigler and Bobbie Vassar, and brothers in law James and Harold Stigler.
His family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 from 10:00am to 11:00am with his funeral service starting at 11:00am at First Congregational Church, 199 Valley St. Willimantic. His burial will follow at New Willimantic Cemetery in Willimantic, CT.
