Leonard B. Tompkins, known to most as “Jake”, was born September 5, 1930, to Leonard and Katherine Tompkins in their home in Windham, CT. Jake spent his entire life, except for the last 5 years, in that same town. As the youngest of 6 children and born during the depression, he learned to love the land and animals on that farm where he grew up.
After high school, he joined the US Navy in 1949 and served on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. After service to his country, he returned home to CT and married Jane Lounsbury. They had two children, Karen, and Clifford.
A life-long member of the Willimantic Elks Lodge 1311, he was immensely proud to serve as Exalted Ruler twice, in 1972 and 1982. He was a proud big rig truck driver and over the years worked for CC Lounsbury, Leary Trucking and Federal Paperboard. He was also a proud member of the New England Teamsters Union.
After selling his home in 2016, he moved to North Port, Florida to be closer to his children and escape the cold winters of the Northeast. Living to the ripe old age of 90, he passed peacefully with his daughter by his side on June 23, 2021.
Jake was a kind-hearted and generous man who always had a story to tell and a nickname for all. His smile and friendship will be missed by many.
He leaves behind his two children, his granddaughter Samantha Bramberger, many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021, at 1:00 pm, at the Windham Center Cemetery, Route 203 in Windham, CT. Immediately following, a Celebration of Jake’s Life will be held most appropriately at the Willimantic Elks Lodge 1311, 198 Pleasant Street, Willimantic, CT from 2pm-7pm. All are welcome and encouraged to attend and share stories, enjoy friendship, food, and drinks in his honor.
