Joseph "Joey" Serra, Jr.

Joseph Serra, Jr. “Joey” died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 21, 2022 in Hebron, CT. Joey was the much loved firstborn son of Susan (Griffin) Wilk and Joseph Serra, Sr.

He galloped into this world on June 6, 1984 and from that day onward he lived life with an insatiable zest. He was friendly, funny, generous and sensitive.  Joe approached his challenges with spunk and tenacity, striving hard to reach the goals he set for himself until addiction took its heartless toll.

As a boy, Joey wanted to be involved in everything. He had an endearing smile and loved to play the class clown. He was in Scouting, Little League and Soccer, he joined innumerable after-school clubs. Joey was a champion chess player who loved animals. He always had a heart for those less fortunate than himself.

 Joey will be sorely missed by his family. He leaves behind his mother, Susan Wilk of Stafford Springs, CT; his father, Joseph Serra, Sr. of Hebron, CT; his  brothers, Joshua and Anthony; his sister, Hailey; his grandfather, Art Griffin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He also leaves his precious little dog Boo, who was his best friend.

Joey did not die of an overdose as so many thousands do, but his addiction took him down the road that led to the violence that claimed his life. Addiction doesn't discriminate, it will take hold and destroy anyone in its path. It hides in the faces of the people all around us. Joey fought his addiction to opioids for years and his family would like to help overcome the stigma that surrounds this disease. If you are an addict, this is a reminder that there are people who love you, with everything they have and no matter what you do. Don't be too afraid or ashamed to ask for help. Over and over if you need to. A winner is just a loser who tried one more time. Joey’s struggle has ended. He is at peace. He is finally free.

His family will receive relatives and friends will on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic, CT 06226. His graveside service will be on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at noon at Abington Cemetery, 592 Mashamoquet Rd. Pomfret Center, CT 06259.
