John Sweet Obituary

John H. Sweet, of Lebanon, Korean war veteran, has lost his battle with Father Time, leaving behind a legacy of family, friends, career and hobbies.

John had a lot of passions. He created a large family with his lifelong sweetheart and partner Ruth (Perkins) Sweet. During their sixty-seven-year marriage, they raised eight children together, and still had the energy and love to raise two of their grandchildren, and welcome thirteen additional grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren into the world.

When John wasn’t being a husband, a dad or a grandfather, he worked as a tool maker to support a large family, and a watch maker to feed his passion for watches and clocks. He also dedicated a lot of time to collecting and caring for his Edison phonographs as a young boy. He loved music, performing in barbershop quartets, old movies, math, cats and tinkering---and he loved people. He was a story teller with a bright twinkle in his eyes, and on the phone you could “hear” his smile and “see” the twinkle in his voice. He made lots of friends along the way and was ahead of his time in understanding people from all parts of life, and all parts of the world.

John leaves behind his wife Ruth, in the care and love of his children: Michael Sweet, Sr. (daughters Sondra Sweet and Serena Sweet); Grace Sweet (children Carrie Anderson Jennings and husband Mike, John Anderson and wife Erica (Crawford), Logan Anderson, Blaine Anderson and wife Victoria (Schlitt); Russell Sweet and wife Emelyne (Palad) (children Kayla Sweet and John Sweet); Patricia Sweet and partner Michael Niewola; Sarah Sweet Fabian and husband Wallace Fabian (daughters Elizabeth Fabian and Caroline Fabian); Carol Sweet Patterson and husband Ward Patterson (sons Robert McDonald and wife Kayla (Dutton) McDonald, and Anthony Sweet) and Michael Sweet, Jr. and wife Jamie (Wager) Sweet (son Tristian Sweet). Other grandchildren include Sally Sweet and Rosa Ramirez (from Rafael Ramirez and deceased daughter Jane Sweet Ramirez).

John also leaves behind his sister Susan (Sweet) MacLachlan, and nieces and nephews Lynette Peret (wife of deceased husband Jim), William Sweet and wife Cindi, Walter Sweet and wife Carole, Polly (Sweet) Benoit and husband Richard, Kerri MacLachlan, Laurie (MacLachlan) Pheiffer and husband Luke, Debie MacLachlan, and Bonnie MacLachlan. He also leaves behind many other cousins, nieces and nephews from the Valleau, Clarks and Perkins families.

We’re hopeful that he will be met by his mother and father Anthea and Ralph Sweet, Sr., his brother Ralph Sweet, Jr., and his son John Sweet, Jr., daughter Jane (Sweet) Ramirez, nephew Jim Peret and niece Ruthie Sweet.

John, Dad, Grampa, Uncle John ------------you will be sadly, sadly missed. We are so proud of you, and grateful to have been part of your life.
