John W. Griffin

John W. Griffin, 79, of Willimantic, CT passed away peacefully on September 25, 2022 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Merrill and Edith Griffin.   

John was a lifelong public servant; serving as a firefighter for the Willimantic Fire Department for 29 years, and as a Judicial Marshal for Windham County for 15 years. While at the fire department, he proudly represented IAFF Local 1033 Union as President for 18 years.  

He enjoyed reading the newspaper every day, playing card games with his sons and granddaughters, and watching sports; particularly the Boston Red Sox and the Ohio State University football team. John was often seen around Willimantic running various daily errands or assisting as a doorman for Potter Funeral Home. 

John is survived by his wife of 53 years; Dorothy Griffin (Durkee), his sons and daughters-in-law; Jeffrey and Kat Griffin, of Bozrah, and Tyler and Kerin Griffin, of Willimantic. John is also survived by his four beloved grandchildren; Rachel, Madison, Zoe, and Fiona as well as several nieces and nephews.

For those looking to pay their respects, calling hours will take place at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic on Sunday, October 2, 2022 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. A Funeral Mass will take place at St Joseph’s Church, 99 Jackson St. Willimantic on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ralph A. Rodman Memorial Scholarship via the Willimantic Firefighters Local 1033, PO Box 115, Willimantic, CT 06226.
