John Denis Enderle

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. John D. Enderle, 65, of Ashford, CT mourn the loss of a loving husband, father, brother, friend and mentor on April 2nd, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. John was born on March 25th, 1953 in Jamaica, NY. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Laurie, and his children: Rebekah Enderle and Erin Simonds; Elizabeth Enderle and Connor Tubridy; Alexandra Enderle and fiancé Burton Kinney; Samuel Enderle, and Andrew Macfarlane. John is also survived by his siblings Jim Enderle, Jill Trask, Jane Cassidy, Jennifer Horn, and Ellen Enderle. He received his B.S., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering, and an M.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He worked at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and was as a professor at North Dakota State University and the University of Connecticut where he retired with emeritus status in 2016. John was a Teaching Fellow at both NDSU and UConn where he taught and encouraged generations of engineering students.  John was a Fellow of and served in many capacities for several professional societies including the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), American Society for Engineering Education and Biomedical Engineering, and was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. He was a former Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Program Evaluator for Bioengineer­ing Programs and member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission. John devoted his career to the study of human eye movement and traumatic brain injury research, as well as, research to aid persons with disabilities, authoring many books on these topics. He was Editor of the NSF Book Series on NSF Engineering Senior Design Projects to Aid Persons with Disabilities, which described almost 2,000 student projects that were constructed for persons with disabilities. John was the Biomedical Engineering Book Series Editor for Morgan and Claypool Publishers, and was the author of three editions of the seminal undergraduate textbook for biomedical engineering, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, and was working on a fourth edition at the time of his death. John cared deeply about education, his students and advances in Biomedical Engineering that could help others. He loved his family and friends, and had a passion for art, history, traveling, classic films and gardening. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of John’s life and legacy at Potter Funeral Home in Willimantic, CT from 2-4 pm on Sunday, April 8th.
