Jane McEvily Obituary

Jane H. McEvily, 89, of Mansfield Center, CT, passed away on January 27, 2021. She is predeceased by her husband, Arthur J. McEvily, Jr. She is survived by her sons, William McEvily, of Mansfield Center, CT, and his two children, Geoffrey and Allysha; Terence McEvily, and his wife, April, of Waterford, CT, and their two sons, Keith and Joey; Timothy McEvily of Manchester, CT; her daughter Melissa McEvily-Schoeplein of Storrs, CT, and her three children, Ryan, Kyle, and Courtney. Jane had four great-grandchildren, Geneva, Mia, Korra, and Sterling.

Jane was born in Rushmere, VA on May 21, 1931 to Edmond W. Jones, Sr. and Beatrice V. Stringfield. She and her late brother, Edmond W. Jones, Jr., “Buddy”, enjoyed assisting their parents, who operated the local Rushmere Post Office and general merchandise store. Jane attended Smithfield High School, where she participated in activities including glee, commercial, yearbook, tennis, and library clubs.

Jane met her late husband, Arthur (Art) J. McEvily, Jr., while she was employed as a secretary at the Newport News Shipyard, where Art was offering engineering consulting services. Jane and Art exchanged vows on December 29, 1954, in Wythe, VA. Jane and Art were celebrating 65 years of marriage at the time of Art’s passing in 2019.

After Jane and Art relocated to Mansfield Center, CT in 1968, Jane became an active community member through her positions with Rajean’s Gifts, Shetucket Harness, and Sage Allen. She also volunteered with the Auxiliary to Windham Hospital. In her retirement, Jane enjoyed starting the day with a coffee at McDonald’s with her “Morning Crew.” She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Jane shared immense love with her children and grandchildren, offering her unconditional support by attending as many of their activities and milestones as possible. She was an avid UConn basketball fan, often sporting a Huskies sweatshirt. Jane will be remembered for her sassy humor, her highly anticipated Christmas Eve gatherings, and her Southern charm.

A private burial will be held. Once safety measures permit, Jane’s family hopes to hold a Celebration of Life in her honor. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the magnificent staff at the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation who cared for Jane during the end of her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jane’s name are suggested to WCMH Auxiliary Fund, 112 Mansfield Avenue, Willimantic, CT 06226. To sign an online guestbook visit www.potterfuneralhome.com
