James H. Winchester, 79, of Norwich, passed peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital. He was born in Norwich, CT on “12/12/41”, the son of the late Robert and Madeline (Williams) Winchester. After working at Electric Boat for 24 years, he pursued his love for the ocean and purchased a 35-foot Nauset lobster boat, appropriately named the “Jim Dandy.” He was an avid outdoorsman, whether he was hauling lobster pots, fly-fishing along the Salmon River or caring for his labradors and pigeons. You could always find him in a pocket tee and baseball cap, a pack of Lucky Strikes abreast and a can of Pepsi in hand.
Left to cherish his memory are his three daughters: Bonnie (Jack) Maliszewski, Julie (Frank) Kornacki, and Susan (Christopher) Gromko; his four grandchildren, Madeline “Miss Madeline”, with whom he shared a very special bond, and Sophie “Sophie Bug” Kornacki, and Emma “My Emmy” and Andrew “Bud” Gromko; his former wife and lifelong companion Frances “Winnie” Winchester; his brother, his best friend, his “Nip,” Daniel Winchester. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Winchester, and his sister, Agnes “Bunny” Hoxsie. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to www.labs4rescue.com or Labs4rescue, Inc. PO Box 955 Killingworth, CT 06419.
