James Joseph Ryan (Jim), 86, of Hampton Connecticut died Thursday, June 4th at Hartford Hospital. Jim was born June 5, 1933 in Washington DC. He was an army veteran who served in France in the 1950s. He later attended Loras College in Dubuque Iowa and graduated with a BA in economics, which he then taught at Loras. Jim moved to New York City and attended Columbia University to study design. He enjoyed a long and successful career working as a scenic designer for CBS and later as the business manager for the United Scenic Artists Union. After retiring he moved to Hampton Connecticut where he lived until his death.
Jim volunteered for a number of years at the Hampton public library. He was a kind and socially concerned person generously supporting causes that met human needs. In Hampton in years past he was a familiar face on his daily walks to the post office and general store with his two Westie terriers.
He is preceded in death by his parents James and Marie (Rhomberg) Ryan and brother Dr. Thomas Ryan (Joan) of Waupaca Wisconsin. He is survived by his brother Charles Ryan (Margreet) of Dubuque Iowa, and eight nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Interment will be at the family site overlooking the Mississippi river in Dubuque Iowa.
