Guenther Stever Obituary

Guenther Otto Stever, affectionately known as Opa, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born on May 24, 1937, in Hamburg, Germany, to the late Otto and Martha Stever.

He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Barbara, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and adventure for 63 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Claudya McPhail (husband Tom) and Andrea Stever Lennon (husband Robert). Opa's legacy extended to his adored grandchildren, Ian Frankel (wife Cindy), Michelle Frankel, Michael Lennon, and Ross Lennon, as well as his treasured great-granddaughters, Carly and Rylie Frankel. He is also survived by brother Arno Stever (wife Eva), and his grandpups, Jeter, Maxi, and Loafie. His love for his family was boundless, and he took immense pride in each of their accomplishments.  He also leaves behind his close friends of 62 years who were more like family to him.

Professionally, Guenther was a respected member of Engineers Union Local 94 in NYC, where he contributed his expertise and dedication to the field. His resilience and leadership were most notably demonstrated as a survivor of the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

Outside of work, Opa’s interests were as diverse as they were passionate. He had a love of kayaking, sailing with his brother, long walks on trails, drives in the country, bicycle riding, and riding his BMW motorcycle.  His interest in coin collecting, bird watching, and gardening reflected his appreciation for the finer details and the beauty of nature. Membership in the Hanseaten German Club and Blaue Jungs allowed him the joy of celebrating his German heritage.

Guenther lived a life rich in experiences and filled with love. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. As we say goodbye to Opa, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a legacy that will endure through the generations. A celebration of life will be held at the family’s convenience.
