George Allen Obituary

George J. Allen, of Mansfield CT, died on January 4, 2021 after battling pancreatic cancer for a year and a half.  He spent his youth on Long Island then attended the College of the Holy Cross (B.S), Boston College (M.A.) and the University of Illinois – Champaign-Urbana (Ph.D. in clinical psychology).  He was privileged to have taught for 40 years at the University of Connecticut where he served as Director of the Clinical Training program from 1984 to 2003.  He published over 100 books and articles and received multiple research awards, including three from the Divisions of Consulting Psychology and Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association.  His community service was recognized by receipt of Distinguished Career Service Awards from the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology, the Connecticut Psychological Association, and Windham Youth Organization.  He was most proud of his teaching, having served as major advisor for almost 100 doctoral students and having influenced positively hundreds of additional graduate and undergraduate students and younger colleagues.  His passion for and prowess at teaching was recognized through multiple regional and national teaching awards from the University of Connecticut Alumni Association, the Connecticut Psychological Association, and the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students.  Throughout his life, he engaged zealously in physical activities; lacrosse, swimming, biking, and marathon running.  He was especially blessed to have spent a vast majority of his life with Lynne, his wife of 54 years, to have witnessed the growth of his children Michael (and spouse Beth) and Leslie (and spouse Sam) into compassionate, empathetic, and socially productive adults, and to have enjoyed a long and joyously playful second childhood with his four grandchildren, Jacob, Maya, James, and Joey.  His family thanks the staff at the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, especially PT Sharon and OT Lynne, Hartford Health Homecare, especially PT Kathy and OT Jennifer, and Home Instead, especially caregivers Michelle, Lauren and Kiarra.

Immediate family members only will participate in a celebration of life Mass on Monday, January 11 at 12pm and the service will be shared virtually via livestream.
