Ellen Green Obituary

Ellen Green, 96, wife of the late Marshall Green, passed away peacefully at Douglas Manor on October 5th, surrounded by her family. She was born in Wigan, England, the daughter of the late Samuel and Sophia (Cannon) Green. Ellen graduated from primary school, then she went to work in a munition factory to support the war effort.  Ellen met Marshall during World War II, while he was stationed in England as an Engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers. Ellen and Marshall married in Wigan, England.  She followed him to the United States as a war bride. Ellen and Marshall built their own home in Columbia, CT., where they raised their three children. She volunteered at the Moor’s Indian Charity School in Columbia.  She was active in The British Brides Club of Manchester, CT., acting as the President for a term.  Ellen worked at the Co-op on Milk Street, she worked as a Librarian for the Medical Library at Windham Hospital and at the Thread Museum in Willimantic. The gardens at her home in Columbia were full of prize winning gladiolas and many other beautiful flowers. In each of the places she lived, she always made flower gardens and loved to feed the birds. She loved the many pets in her life. The last being her chihuahua Buster.  The time she spent with her family gave her the greatest joy. She has been very involved with her four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Ellen had the opportunity to return for several visits, “back home” to England to visit with her sisters and their families. Ellen is survived by her children, John Green and his wife Ruth of Ashford, Harold Green and his wife Maralyn of Windham. Four grandchildren, Cindy LeMay and her husband David of Vernon, Jennifer Green of Ashford, Jason Green and his wife Kara of Chaplin, Eric Green and his wife Stephanie of Westerly, RI. Five great-grandchildren Tiffany Gagnon, Eric Green Jr., Drew Green, Avery Green, Oskar Green. Her sister Rita Pearce of Newcastle, England.  Ellen was predeceased by her daughter Rita Ellen Green, brother Samuel Green, and sister Edna Arkwright. The family would like to thank all the kind people at Douglas Manor for their care and support. A cemetery service will be private with a Celebration of Life to be held at a future date.
