Elga L. Bivins, 71, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at William W. Backus Hospital. Elga was born in Willimantic, CT on March 4, 1952 to Jānis Bivins and Laima (Sulcs) Bivins. Elga was predeceased by her parents and both of her brothers Aivars (Butch) and Valdis Bivins from Willimantic. She is survived by her aunt Lilija (Sulcs) Paegle, many cousins and close family and friends in the U.S., Canada, and Latvia. Elga will be greatly missed by many, along with her kind heart, and gentle soul.
Elga was a 1970 graduate of Windham High School and attended Eastern Connecticut State University. Elga dedicated 45 years to the Willimantic Public Library, employed there from 10/27/1975-09/23/2020; as a Library Technician II in the adult department. She specialized in inter-library loans. Elga was involved in changing the card catalog to a digital online catalog for fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, audio books and book/movie CD's. She enjoyed greeting and helping patrons at the front desk. Elga was also an avid reader and loved giving book recommendations.
Elga enjoyed many hobbies and kept herself busy. She enjoyed traveling to Martha’s Vineyard and enjoyed listening to mvyradio.org 88.7 FM radio station. She designed beautiful, embroidered quilts. Elga was also passionate about gardening, her favorite flower was the sunflower. She also loved her dear cat Misty. Elga had quite a large collection of owls and bees. Needless to say, yellow was her favorite color and Amber was her favorite stone, which comes from Latvia. Elga was of the Latvian descent, and she was very proud of her heritage. Her first language was Latvian, learning English in the Windham Public School System. During the holidays she found much joy in decorating her home into a winter wonderland with her Department 56 Christmas and Holiday Villages and Christmas Decorations. Elga certainly embraced the Holiday Spirit.
A very special thank you to the staff at Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Storrs, CT for their exceptional care of Elga over the past few years.
