Edmund Sheridan Kelly, 89, of Storrs, was born in Chicago, IL on January 18, 1930 to Edmund and Marian Margaret (O’Brien) Kelly. Marian died shortly after the birth and the baby was raised by her sisters, Irene and Abigail. When his father remarried several years later, Irene and her husband, Dr. Louis Wehrle, legally adopted Edmund changing his last name to Wehrle.
Ed grew up to graduate from the University of Notre Dame in 1952 as well as to receive that University’s Master of Arts in History in 1954. For the next two years he served with the 7th Cavalry in Japan. On returning he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Chicago.
Before coming to the University of Connecticut, where he was made a Professor in 1975 and served one term as Chairman of the Department, he was a lecturer at Indiana University and an Assistant Professor at Michigan State and John Carroll University.
The author of three books and numerous articles and reviews, Ed Wehrle was widely traveled, with his last award, a Fulbright teaching grant, taking him to Taiwan and Asia.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary (Nelson) Wehrle and their three children, Margaret (Chris) Murphy, Edmund (Jacqueline), and Matthew; as well as five grandchildren, Gearod, Declan, and Liam Murphy, and Annabel and Josephine Wehrle. He was predeceased by his half-brother, Stephen Kelly and half-sister, Joan Kelly.
There are no calling hours. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 10:00am at St. Thomas Aquinas, 46 North Eagleville Rd. Storrs. Burial to follow in the Storrs Cemetery.
