Clarence Calder Obituary

Clarence “Clem” R. Calder, 95, of Mansfield Center, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024 at Anthology of Simsbury. He was born in Lynn, Massachusetts to the late Clarence R. Calder, Sr. and Helen (Smith) Calder. Clarence graduated from Lynn Classical High School and Fitchburg State College. He then proudly served for 2 years in the Navy. Following his service in the military, he continued with his education, earning his Master’s degree at Northeastern University and his PhD at the University of Connecticut. While attending Northeastern University, he met Rose Vasilakopoulos and they wed in 1958. Clarence accepted a teaching position at the University of Connecticut in 1961, where he taught for 28 years, concluding his career as a Professor of Education.

Clarence enjoyed gardening and would share his “crops” with family and friends. He also had a passion for woodworking and made many items including tables, bookcases, desks and jelly cabinets. He was also known for making wooden bowls for family and friends.  Clarence and Rose enjoyed raising their family together in Mansfield Center and going to sporting events at UConn. Rose and Clarence enjoyed traveling together throughout the United States and internationally and especially loved cruising. Their favorite trips included exploring Hong Kong, Greece, Turkey, England and South America.

Clarence is survived by his son, George C. Calder and his wife Linda of Granby, CT; his sister, Virginia Gogas and her husband George of Groton, MA. and his son-in-law, David DelVaglio of Suffield; as well as four beloved grandsons, Andrew Calder (Taylor), Glen Calder (Laura), Nicholas DelVaglio and Zachary DelVaglio. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Rose; his daughter, Christine DelVaglio; his sister, Florence Natowicz; his brother, John Calder; and his brother, David Calder.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, February 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson Street (Rte. 195) Willimantic, CT. The Funeral will be held on Saturday, February 10th at 10:30 AM at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 247 Washington Street, Norwich, CT. Burial to follow at the Storrs Cemetery on North Eagleville Road. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clarence’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association:
