Carmen Maria (Velez) Nunez, 92, of Willimantic, wife of the late Juan Nunez, to whom she was married to for 70 years, passed in peace on August 13, 2019 at Windham Hospital. When asked how long she was married, she always responded “All my life”.
Carmen was a superb cook and kept the family actively engaged through the meals she served and the supportive home environment she created. Her dedication to her family was reflected in the long hours she worked to help provide support for everyone. Considered one of the most beautiful women in her home town of San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, she married Juan and migrated to the United States in search of the American Dream. She was a proud American who never missed an opportunity to vote as an expression of her gratitude for the life she and her husband were able to provide for their family. She adored being part of this great nation.
She will be remembered for the love and caring she provided her family and for her capacity to love unconditionally and with forgiveness.
Carmen was the loving mother of Elsa and her late son Johnny Nunez. In addition to her daughter Elsa and her husband Richard Freeland, she is survived by her sister Josefa Velez and brother Archangel Velez who reside in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico; she was a proud grandmother of five, whom they called “Ita” with love and affection, Antony Wormack, Maria Forrest, John Nunez, Diana Nunez and Kristina Nunez; and granddaughter in law Rosalyn Wormack, and grandson in law Greg Forrest; eight great grandchildren continued the tradition and called her “Ita” as well, Avery and Ethan Wormack, Onajae Harrison, Miracle Leyro and Anthony Kerivan; Madeleine, Victoria and Isabella Forrest. She is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews of Puerto Rico and her many friends and family of Willimantic, CT.
