Byron William Monroe, age 84, of Dauphin Island, Alabama passed away peacefully on May 21, 2023. He was born in Willimantic, Connecticut and lived in Lebanon, Connecticut until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick Monroe and Joan Vertefeuille, his wife Maggie, his son Richard, and his sister and brother- in- law Susan and Walter Samson.
Byron is survived by his loving daughter Donna and son-in-law Jim Compton of Glen Allen, Virginia. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Jessica, James, and Patrick (Molly) Compton and his nephew Craig Samson.
Byron worked for and retired as a Lieutenant for the State of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicle. In his lifetime Byron served in the U.S. Army as a drill sergeant in California. He was an excellent athlete and enjoyed playing basketball and softball in Willimantic city leagues. He was also an active participant in both Willimantic and Mobile social clubs. He was a member and past president of the Franco American Civic and Social Club. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge #1311. On Dauphin Island, Byron was a member and past president of the VFW Post 250, Dauphin Island Veteran Association member, and Club 31 member.
He and Maggie enjoyed many retired years on Dauphin Island and loved all his travels, especially his adventures in Biloxi and New Orleans. He is survived by many wonderful friends he made during his long life.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Ascension Funeral Home, 1016 Hillcrest Road, Mobile, Alabama from 5:00- 7:00 PM. He will have a graveside service and will be buried at Saint Joseph Cemetery, 134 Club Road, Willimantic, Connecticut on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 10:00 AM. A celebration of his life will follow at his favorite club, the French Club across the street from the cemetery on Club Road.
