Barbara Lucas Obituary

Barbara Gottlieb Lucas, age 91, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2021 at Kimberly Hall North Memory Care Center in Windsor, Connecticut surrounded by her loving family.

Barbara was born in Medfield, MA on February 7, 1930, to Leopold Gottlieb and Lois Heard Gottlieb.  Barbara moved to Chaplin, Connecticut as a small child with her parents and five siblings.

Barbara was married to the love of her life Paul Maxim Lucas for 42 years and had seven children whom they raised in Chaplin, Connecticut where she resided for nearly five decades.   She met Paul at her beloved  Diana’s Pool, a family favorite swimming hole.  She and her husband owned and operated Lucas Auto Exchange also in Chaplin, CT until her husband’s passing. Barbara was the matriarch of a large family that grew to include eleven Grandchildren, nine Great-Grandchildren, and one Great-Great granddaughter. Barbara devoted her life to caring for her cherished family. Despite her family moving around the U.S. and world, she always stayed connected through beautiful handwritten letters and cards, never forgetting a birthday or anniversary.

An avid gardener and lover of nature, she had many interests and passions across her long life that included art, archeology, and historical literature with a particular interest in the Russian Revolution and World War II. After raising her family, Barbara had a career in healthcare and as a child-care provider to her grandson.  Barbara lived the latter part of her life in Willimantic, Connecticut until moving to Kimberly Hall North in Windsor Connecticut, a memory-care home.  The Lucas family would like to extend a deep gratitude to the staff for the loving care provided throughout Barbara’s stay.  A special thank you to her loving CNA Sharon Green who provided her comfort during this terrible pandemic.

Barbara is predeceased by her husband Paul, her parents, and her brothers David and Benjamin Gottlieb. Barbara is survived by her brother Robert Gottlieb and wife Betty Jo of Enfield, CT; sisters Joyce Wisnesky of Enfield, CT, and Marjorie Lavoie of Pinehurst, NC; daughters Paulette Haines and her husband Larry of Marietta, Georgia, Cheryl Bourgeois and her husband Robert of Chaplin, CT, Brenda Lucas of Willimantic, CT, and Suzanne Lucas-Deneen and her husband Robert of Windsor, CT; and sons Wayne Lucas and his wife Patrice of Chaplin, CT, John Lucas and his wife Kristen of Chaplin, CT, and Joel Lucas and his partner Terry Brown of Old Saybrook, CT.

Barbara was a loyal, kind, loving soul, always with a smile, that will be missed by all who knew her.
