Angel Felipe Gómez, 88, of Willimantic, CT passed away on April 9, 2022. He was born in Lajas, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Felipe Gómez Seda and Angelica Gómez.
Angel grew up on a small farm facing large sugar cane fields along with four brothers and three sisters. When he was 18 years old, he moved to New York City and found work manufacturing eyeglass frames. He met Lillian, the love of his life at a mutual friend’s wedding and married her soon after. Angel enjoyed industry and later found work with United Abrasives (SAIT), where he was known as “Angelo” to his co-workers, continuing his career as Supervisor of Technical Operations. At home, his adult family called him, Felipe.
Angel was a weather enthusiast, and always had the word on conditions across the globe. He also loved people and treated everyone he met like family. Children called him Welo (short for abuelo), young adults adopted him as a dad, and the ones closer to his age became brothers and sisters… many turning into lifelong friends. He was always quick to point out that we should get to know our extended family and to love our neighbors. He was a man of deep faith and was always concerned with a person’s spiritual condition, wanting the best for everyone around him. Angel had a strong interest in photography, was an avid Yankee baseball fan, and loved to sing in the church choir. His strong tenor voice could fill a room right to the last weeks of his life as he sang one of his favorite hymns, “How Great Thou Art.”
He is survived by his children, Philip and his wife Donna, David and his wife Blaze, and Ruth and her husband Johnnie Baker III; grandchildren Gabriel and his wife Samantha, Luke and his wife Samantha, Timothy, Michael, Joshua, and Lindsey; and great grandson Elliott.
He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Carmen Lillian Gómez.
Angel’s family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, April 15, 2022, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Iglesia Bautista de Willimantic, 32 Walnut St. Willimantic, Connecticut. His funeral service will be Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 10:00 AM at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic, with his burial to follow at New Willimantic Cemetery.
