Alyce L. Hammarstrom, 92, passed away on August 30, 2021 at home with her daughter, Nancy by her side. She was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to John D. and Alice (Adams) Clarke. Alyce was predeceased by her son Jay (age 13) and her husband, Karl. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Hammarstrom of Columbia and Karen Hammarstrom of Northport, Fla., a granddaughter, Kristen Hammarstrom-Davis of Northport and six great-granddaughters ranging in age from 13 years to 3 months. Alyce also leaves behind a sister, Joan Cooper of San Francisco, CA, a brother and his wife, John P. and Estelle Clarke of Sun City, Fla. and a sister and her husband, Lois and Eugene Gale of Columbia.
Alyce was an employee of the University of Connecticut for over 20 years - first in the Purchasing Department and then as a secretary to Dr. Arthur Roberts in the School of Education. She and Karl enjoyed many years of retirement, traveling back and forth to their home in Florida. They enjoyed many friends and a vibrant social life in both locations. Alyce was also a communicant of St. Columba’s Church in Columbia for many years.
Her personality served as a bright beacon to all her friends and loved ones. Quick with a quip, her sense of humor was always subtle in delivery and included clever observations. Genuinely friendly and kind to any and everyone, she will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and close family friends who provided care, support and guidance along the way; Renee Pendergast, Carol Walkup, Michelle Osczapinski, and long time family friends and neighbors, Toni Ellzey, Janet McKusick, and Judy Naumec. We are forever indebted to their kindness, compassion and expertise.
A graveside service will be held Monday, September 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Columbia BURYING GROUND Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Family Support Organization, 11218 John Galt Boulevard, Suite 103, Omaha, NE 68137.
