Alice Spencer Obituary

Alice Jane (Flewwellin) Spencer, of Storrs, CT, passed on April 15, 2022.  She was the beloved wife of Prescott Bishop Spencer.  Alice was born in Ossining, NY on May 15, 1934, one of five children of Henry and Alice Flewwellin.  In her late teens her family moved to North Scituate, RI where she attended church at the North Scituate Baptist Church.  This is where she met Prescott and they married on May 4, 1957. After high school, Alice worked for a bank in Providence RI where she lost her car in Hurricane Carol in 1954.  She and Prescott moved to Storrs, CT in 1959 as Prescott took a job at AT&T in Hartford CT.  Church was an important part of life for Alice.  Prescott and Alice first attended Warrenville Baptist Church, then spent many years as members of the Willimantic Baptist Church, and for the last number of years at First Baptist Church of Mansfield, CT.  Over the years Alice served on the deacons, trustees, ran holiday programs (one that included live animals parading Jesus down Main Street Willimantic), taught Sunday school, and served on the flower and social committees.  She even ran Sunday School in her living room when illness in the family prevented church attendance on Sunday mornings.

When Alice’s children were young, she opened a daycare center in her home, caring for young family members of school teachers and the university professors.  When she was 40 years old, she went back to school to study nursing at Windham Technical School where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).  She said that going back to school was one of the toughest things that she had ever done, but with the support of her family, she served as an example to her children that education could happen at any age. She spent her career working as a geriatric nurse, starting at Willington Convalescent home and retiring after serving many years at Douglas Manor in Windham.

Alice was an avid quilter. She loved picking fabrics and learning new designs and patterns; a student of her craft.  She made quilts for every member of her family and for many others as well. Her gifts were celebrated during an anniversary celebration, where everyone who had one of her quilts brought them to display, filling the entire community room at First Baptist of Mansfield.

The most special part of Alice was her love for her husband and the love for her children.  Prescott and Alice were teenage sweethearts and they remained devoutly in love and dedicated to each other until her death.

She is survived by her husband, Prescott Spencer; her sister, Marion Marston of Wisconsin; and three of her four children: Kathy Jesmonth and her husband Kevin of Norwich, CT; Gwen Spencer and her husband Ozzie Picard of Sutton, MA; and Todd Spencer and his wife Kirstin of Windsor, CT.  Her 4th child, Michael Spencer predeceased her in 2015 due to cancer and his widow Judy.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Jessica Kender and her husband Bob; Wesley Spencer and his wife Jane; Kyle Spencer; Cassie Carmello and her husband Joey; Brenden Spencer; Lauren Spencer and her boyfriend Eric; Ashley Picard and Alex Picard.  She is also survived by five great grandchildren - Sadie, Truman, Michaela, Grace, Robert, and step-grandchildren - Dean, Molly and Shamus.

She will be greatly missed. Her life blessed many individuals.  Donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Mansfield in her memory.  Her funeral is scheduled to take place at the First Baptist Church of Mansfield located at 945 Storrs Rd (Route 195), Storrs, CT on Thursday, April 21, 2022.  Visiting will take place at 9:30 with the service starting at 10:30, followed by her burial at Westford Hills Cemetery, 1796 Westford Hill Road, Ashford, CT.
