William Leyko, 83, of Willimantic, husband of the late Mary (McVeigh) Leyko, died Saturday October 12, 2002 at the Windham Hospital. He was born June 1, 1919 in Springfield, MA, the son of the late Matthew and Katherine (Klauss) Leyko. He was a retired Navy veteran of 25 years, serving during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, achieving the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. He also retired from the University of Connecticut after 20 years of employment. Mr. Leyko was a member of the Pulaski-American Club and the V.F.W. in Willimantic. He is survived by 3 sons, William Leyko Jr. of Vernon, Merton Leyko of Putnam and Robert Leyko of Willimantic, 3 brothers, Matthew Leyko of Norwich, Raymond Leyko of Preston and Anthony Leyko of Portland, ME, 2 sisters, Helen Bucko of New London and Carol Amedeo of Watch Hill RI, 3 grandchildren, Anthony Leyko of Ledyard, Ann Dewart of Ashford and Eli Matthew Leyko of Putnam, many nieces and nephews. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will be a gathering at the funeral home on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. prior to the procession to his Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Willimantic. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham.
