William D. Grant, 78, of Windham Center, husband of Elaine (Hopkins) Grant, died Friday March 1, 2013 at home. He was born July 20, 1934, in Willimantic, son of the late Leverett and Edna (Carpenter) Grant. William graduated from Windham High School in 1952, then served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. William retired after 35 years in the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #478 as a heavy equipment operator, working on major projects such as the Gold Star Bridge I-95 New London, I-91 in Enfield, Millstone Nuclear Power Plant and several gas pipelines. After his retirement, William enjoyed collecting antique construction toys. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son William E. Grant, of Marlborough, a sister Cynthia Chandler, of Colorado, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Melissa (Grant) Caya. The family would like to thank Dr. Mary Barry and Dr. Mark Dailey for their kind and compassionate care. There are no calling hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
