Walter E. Schroder

Walter E. Schroder, 76, of Columbia, husband of Joan (Williams) Schroder, died peacefully with his family at his side at Hartford Hospital on Sunday November 9, 2003. He was born November 20, 1926 in Hartford, son of the late Walter and Laura (Brink) Schroder, was raised in Hartford and moved to Columbia Lake in 1955. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and attended the University of Connecticut. For many years he was a Life Underwriter at Connecticut Mutual and most recently was self employed as a chemical addiction counselor. He was active in a number of community affairs, was an honorary member of the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the New Firehouse Building Committee. Mr. Schroder was a 50 year member of the Sphinx Shrine Club and a past Exalted Ruler of Willimantic Elks Lodge #1311. In his later years he enjoyed world travel, was an avid reader and a friend of Bill W for over 25 years. In addition to his wife of 52 years he is survived by 4 children, Paul J. Schroder and his wife Janet of Norwich, Mark W. Schroder and his wife Lisa of Lebanon, Lynn A. Schroder and her partner Kim Rowe of Holyoke, MA, John M. Schroder and his wife Judy of Columbia, 4 grandchildren, Krista N. Schroder and Colton W. Schroder, both of Lebanon, Andrew B. Schroder and Matthew J. Schroder, both of Columbia. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be private in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
