Walter Addison Lowell passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 85 years of age. He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Chalmers Lowell, daughter Cynthia Lowell Gay of Key West, FL , his son Walter Duston Lowell II, and his wife Susan of Chapel Hill, NC, daughter Betsy Lowell Deloof and her husband Jon Kleinberg of Manchester, CT, and his son Thomas Chalmers Lowell and his wife Lisa of Cary, NC; his granddaughters: Jocelyn, Carrie, Molly, Allison, Julianne, Hadley, Jennifer, Briana, Kelsie, Ashlin, Mackenzie, and Riley; great grandchildren: Addison, Kyla, Dylan, Zoe, and Gabriela. Walter was predeceased by his sister Geraldine Lowell Zeni. He is survived by his sister, Constance Lowell Morrissette, and several nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Willimantic, Walter was the son of Walter Duston Lowell and Jesse Robinson Lowell. A graduate of Windham High School in 1945, Walter attended North Carolina State University from 1945 to 1951, which was interrupted by two years of military service in the United States Army, 64th F.A.BN., 25th Infantry Division, stationed in Japan. Walter started his career in Boston as a color chemist with National Aniline Corporation, followed by many years in management with Standard Pyroxoloid Coporation of Leominster, MA. Walter returned to Willimantic where he was the Assistant Superintendent of the Wet Processing Division of the American Thread Company from 1965 until his retirement in 1985. Walter was a member of The First Congregational Church of Willimantic for over 50 years where he served various roles including Deacon, member of the Board of Trustees, and a member of several committees. Walter was also on the Board of Directors of the Windham Youth Organization, and served on the Windham Water Commission. As a founding member and Incorporator of Camp Wellville in Ashburnham, MA, Walter and the Lowell family spent their summers camping, swimming, and boating. Their love for Camp Wellville and the enjoyment of the outdoors has been passed on to all of the following generations. Walter loved many sports and was an avid bowler who loved golf, fishing, sailing, cycling, and horseshoes. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan. Walter followed UCONN Women's Basketball for many years and was a fan before they became a nationally recognized team. He was a lover of classical music. All who knew Walter knew of his lifelong love of ice cream which he has passed on to all of his grandchildren. A trip to Friendly's, Shady Glen, or Silver Ranch was never to be missed. Walter will be dearly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at The First Congregational Church of Willimantic on June 22, 2013 at 11:00 A.M.
