Thomas R. Lackman, 89, of Ashford, died on Wednesday April 11, 2012. He was born in Thomaston, CT on June 4, 1922 to the late Edward R. and Rena (Buell) Lackman. He grew up in Thomaston and moved to eastern Connecticut in the 1940's to work at Maple View Farm in Mansfield. He and wife Dorothy settled in Ashford in 1952 where they raised their five children. Tom was manager of J.J. Mottes Ready Mix Concrete in Stafford Springs, CT for over 40 years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was actively involved in Ashford town politics for many years giving voice to his conservative views on town spending. Tom took great pride in raising Red Devon cows for many, many years on his small farm in Ashford. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and selling fresh eggs to his "good" customers who took pleasure in bantering with him over eggs. Tom was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Gardiner) Lackman, his daughter Susan L. Danahy, two brothers and four sisters. He leaves behind his four children, Deborah Walthert and her husband Bruno of Santa Margarita, CA, Edward Lackman and his wife Irene of Union, Stephan Lackman and his wife Liz of Willington, Nancy Flynn and her husband Lawrence of Storrs; ten grandchildren, Audrey Walthert of San Francisco, CA, Michael Lackman of Unionville, Kate Lackman-Rodriguez of Vernon, Ryan Lackman of Boulder, CO, Tyler Lackman of Ashford, Kristen and Hillary Lackman of Willington, Erin Flynn of Durham, NC, Laura Flynn of Indianapolis, IN and Clare Flynn of Storrs, a great granddaughter, Olivia Lackman-Rodriguez, a sister, Lois Taylor of Pasadena, CA a brother, Roger Lackman of Bessemer, MI, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church of Mansfield, 945 Storrs Road, Route 195, Mansfield. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family at Hillside Cemetery in Storrs. There will be no calling hours.
