Thelma Andrews Humes

Thelma Humes passed away at Douglas Manor in Windham on January 4th, 2013 after a period of declining health. She was born in Willimantic on May 1, 1916 and lived in Willimantic during her childhood. After marriage to the late Gurdon F. Humes they moved to Mansfield where they built a house and raised their children, Brad and Linda. Thelma was a homemaker for many years while also working at Southern New England Telephone Co, the Village Treat, and Barrows and Burham's store before working as a secretary in the Mansfield Public School system and the Chaplin Elementary School. In later years she "took care of the elderly" while working at the Card Home. She was well liked by all who were fortunate enough to know her and enjoyed helping people out whenever she could. Thelma also loved the many dogs in her life. Thelma and her family enjoyed their trips to Wells Beach, Maine every summer. This was looked forward to as it eventually became a yearly tradition enjoyed by all. Even later in life she would hop in her car and drive to Maine to surprise her daughter for a visit and a walk on the beach. Thelma is predeceased by her late husband Gurdon Humes, her father and mother, Russell and Hazel (Flint) Andrews. She is survived by her son, Bradford C. Humes and wife, Sue, of Willimantic and daughter Linda L. Petersen and her husband Pete of Wells, Maine. Grandchildren include Cynthia Humes, Craig Humes, and Shannon Emerton. Great-grandchildren are Nikia and Dominic Passarello, Zachary Pierce, Zoe Emerton and Sawyer Smith. Thelma also is survived by her bother Malcolm Andrews and wife Anne and their children Jane and Peter ,and several nieces and nephews. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic from 1:00 to 2:00 PM with funeral services beginning at 2:00 PM.
