Susan W. Adam 1941-2013 On October 4th, 2013, Mrs. Susan Walsh Adam passed away peacefully at her home in Storrs, CT, comforted by her daughters following a brief illness. She was 72 years old. The eldest daughter of the late Thomas James and Ethel Lewis Walsh of Jamaica Plain, MA, Mrs. Adam was born in Boston, MA on May 4, 1941. She graduated from Girl's Latin School in 1958, then Simmons College and the UCLA Graduate School of Public Health. She sang soprano and played classical piano most of her life most notably in the Newport Naval Choristers, and the Trinity Church Choirs in Newport, RI and Boston, MA. She was invited to play piano for the Boston Pops as a guest pianist in 1959. Throughout her career, Mrs. Adam distinguished herself as a committed and innovative advisor on health care delivery systems. Working at Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital, she was directly involved in the planning, financing, building, equipping and commissioning of over one million square feet of research and clinical space. She was also a student advisor at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Most recently, Mrs. Adam was president of Adam & Associates International, Inc., a consulting firm that built a Burn/Trauma Unit in Algiers and equipped several hospitals in Nigeria. She served on the Sub-Saharan Africa Committee of the Export-Import Bank of the United States and was a member of the Corporate Council on Africa. Her passion for excellent, innovative healthcare for those in need led her to take many trips to Africa and to bring many African students and professionals to the United States for training. She had a distinguished record of community service as a founding member of Trinity Hospice of Boston. She worked successfully to include end-of-life curricula at Harvard Medical School and Boston University Medical School. She was a member of the Board of Directors for Sherrill House in Boston, bringing management expertise and commitment to compassionate patient care to her service there. She was also a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and Friends of the Mansfield Public Library. She is survived by her sisters Judith Baker of Gastonia, NC; and Kate Vaughan of Littleton, NH; her brother Tom Walsh of Ann Arbor, MI; her daughters Elizabeth Adam of Oakland, CA; and Sarah Adam Lacombe of Storrs, CT; her grandchildren Sophie, Alexander, Olivia and Samuel Lacombe, and Evan and Connor DiGiorgio; and nephews Scotty and Bryan Nichols. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 2 pm, Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to support the Susan W. Adam Lewy Body Dementia Lecture Fund at Sherrill House. Susan was instrumental in establishing this annual lecture.
