Sumner Maurice Cohen

Sumner M. Cohen, 93, of Storrs, beloved husband of the late Helen (Weinstein) Cohen, died Sunday Oct. 31, 2004 at the Windham Hospital. He was born Sept. 10, 1911 in Malden, MA. the son of Samuel L. and Frances (Yarrin) Cohen. Mr. Cohen received his undergraduate degree in chemistry and zoology from the City College of New York. His first Masters' degree, which was in organic chemistry, was granted by Tufts University in 1935. He earned a second Masters' in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut. For ten years, Mr. Cohen taught at the Norwich Free Academy before assuming his first position with the University of Connecticut as a teacher of zoology at the Waterbury Campus. He moved to the Ft. Trumbull Campus as Assistant Director in Charge of Student Life, in 1946. After a successful stint at Ft. Trumbull, he was asked to transfer to the Storrs campus in 1948 as Assistant Director of Men's Housing. In spite of his many responsibilities, Mr. Cohen completed his Doctorate in Educational Administration at the University of Connecticut in 1959. By 1961 he became the Director of Housing and Food Service and in 1977 he became Director of the Office of Residential Life until his retirement in 1980. Hard work, concern for students and dedication were always the hallmarks of Mr. Cohen's service to the university. After retirement, he enjoyed working in his garden, playing golf, spending time in the company of his family and friends and always enjoyed cooking. He was an avid sports fan who was happy that he lived to see the Boston Red Sox win the World Series. He is survived by 3 daughters, Carol Colombo and her husband Paul of Quincy, MA., Deborah Cohen of Plainsboro, N.J. and Ellen Cohen of Malibu, CA. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Gertrude Slosberg and Esther Gordon. Private funeral services were held Monday at the Hillel Burial Society Cemetery, Mansfield.
