Stephen Bandalos Obituary
Stephen C. Bandalos, 72, of Willimantic, CT passed away on Sunday January 21, 2024, at home after a brief illness, surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. Stephen was born in Hartford, CT and was the only child of S. Cary Bandalos and Lee (Sullivan) Bandalos. For 42 years, Stephan lived in Columbia, CT with his foster mother, Mrs. Elsie Dunnack, and foster siblings. In 1995, Stephen moved to North Street in Willimantic and was greatly cared for by all those lucky enough to meet him.
One of Stephen’s strongest advocates was Pamela Bridgeford of Mansfield, CT. For 29 years, she fiercely supported and cared for Stephen. Her staunch dedication to his care brought on additional guardianship supports, Michelle Davis, of East Hartford, CT, in 2023. Ms. Davis quickly took on the role of supporting Stephen in his final days. The devotion and love for Stephen provided by his staff and guardians was evident by the amazing care and bond shared with him.
Stephen had many friends at the Baroco Day program. He loved the special care and attention he received there. Baroco helped Stephen become one of his admired superheroes, Batman, by creating his own batmobile. He enjoyed this community and friendships, especially their Men’s Group, a place where he engaged in fun activities and camaraderie.
When at home, Stephen spent his days playing with his toys that he often displayed on his wheelchair, as well as watching TV, listening to music, socializing, and enjoying various community outings. Stephen loved his trips to Walmart; those were his absolute favorite! He was overjoyed when he received his own Walmart vest. Stephen was an outdoor enthusiast who loved sitting in his gazebo and watching the birds eat from their feeders. He liked to listen to nature sounds which comforted him at the time of his passing.
Stephen will be most remembered for his wonderful disposition, his strength, incredible sense of humor and his smile that lit up a whole room. He had an infectious laugh and could capture the attention of anyone with his sweet personality. Stephen was a true superhero. He will forever be the official greeter of North Steet.
