Sheldon Mossberg Obituary
Sheldon Aaron Mossberg originally of Warwick, RI and resident of Columbia, CT passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2019 surrounded by his family. Sheldon, or “Shelly” as his friends and family called him was a loving son, brother, father and grandfather, and devoted husband.  Shelly had eclectic taste as a European history buff, enthusiastic  Star Trek fan, classical music lover, cultivator of houseplants, bookworm, ardent progressive democrat, and lifelong advocate for the working poor and disabled. He was rarely seen without reading material, a mug of coffee or a moustache.

Shelly was born May 31, 1947 to Alfred and Estelle (Deluty) Mossberg in Providence Rhode Island.  He was the first in his family to go to college, obtaining a B.A. in History from Rhode Island College (RIC) in 1970. As a student at RIC he became politically radicalized and was a member of Students for a Democratic  Society and was active in the anti-war movement. On his way to completing an M.A. in history from the University of Chicago in 1974, he traveled to Paris and Nantes where he wrote extensively on French Labor movements.  He received a law degree from the University of Connecticut in 1984 and worked as both a paralegal and an attorney at Connecticut Legal Services in Willimantic, CT.

Shelly lived a life of service. In a 30 year career as a Social Security and Disability attorney in private practice in Willimantic, he advocated tirelessly and tremendously for the most vulnerable populations including the injured, mentally ill, physically disabled, and America’s veterans. He was also committed to creating justice and change outside of his professional life, serving on several Boards of Directors including the United Way and United Services for over a decade. He was an active member of Temple Bnai Israel in Willimantic and in recent years led a book club devoted to the study of Jewish History.

Shelly was a family man and leaves behind Marjorie Golden-Mossberg, his wife and partner in all things of 39 years; his son Benjamin Mossberg and his wife Hilary and their daughter Lily currently living in the Republic of Congo; his son Jonah Mossberg and fiancée Emily Hartz of Guilford, Vermont; his brother David Mossberg of Warwick, RI; as well as a gaggle of dear family friends in Connecticut, Rhode Island and France and his granddog Franklin.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at 10:30 AM, at Temple Bnai Israel, 383 Jackson St., Willimantic, CT with a Burial Service at Lincoln Park Cemetery, 1469 Post Rd., Warwick, RI at 1:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can please be made in his name to United Services or the Southern Poverty Law Center.

As Shelly would say: LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!

Shiva will be held at the Mossberg home, 47 Szegda Road, Columbia, CT, beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26th and Saturday, December 28th 7:00 p.m.
