On August 2, 2016 at 8:53 am at the age of 91, while surrounded by his loved ones looking out over the Willimantic River Valley, Lloyd J. Schmidt, son of Erwin and May Schmidt of Appleton, Wisconsin, took his last breath. Lloyd was born in Wisconsin but lived most of his life in Storrs, Connecticut with his wife Marilyn Loyzim of 38 years who passed in 1998. A Fulbright Scholar and veteran, his love for Music led to many achievements including serving as Music Consultant for the Connecticut State Department of Education where he guided educators, developed cutting edge learning initiatives, and received a Presidential Council ?Projects to Advance Creativity ? Award. He also served as the President of the Connecticut Music Educators Association, Keynoted many educational conferences around the world and served as the Music Director for Eastern Montana College, Rocky Mountain College, University of Arkansas, and taught at UCONN and E.O. Smith high school. In retirement Lloyd also conducted the Willimantic City Band, played the first horn in the Manchester Civic Orchestra, and arranged music for his Brass Quintet which he played until he was 84. Throughout retirement, Lloyd truly enjoyed working on the house and land where he lived for fifty-two years. He often worked on getting things just right, inside and out, chopping here and rearranging there, until he had things just the way he wanted them. Above all else, however, Lloyd was extraordinarily proud of his family and without fail he demonstrated his unconditional love, support and counsel in many ways. Lloyd is survived by his three sons: Alan Schmidt, his wife Shelley Warren and their daughter Paige Warren of Middletown, CT. Brian Schmidt, his wife Emily, their son, Peyton and their daughter Hailey of Seattle, Washington, and Wayne Schmidt, his wife Marketa, and their son Logan of Portland, CT. A celebration of Lloyd's life will be on August 27, 2016 from 3PM-6PM at 31 Ball Hill Road in Storrs in the form of an open house.
