Samuel Martin Obituary
Samuel K. “Ken” Martin, 87, of Middletown, CT passed away on January 25, 2022. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ, the last surviving child of the late Samuel B. and Audrey L. (Demarest) Martin.
Ken was a Design Specialist at Elizabethtown Gas Company for 18 years, then Sales Engineer at Control Associates for 18 years before retiring in 1992. During these years he also worked several part-time jobs to support his large family.
Ken took pride in his service to others; serving as a submariner in the US Navy during the Korean War, and Coast Guard Search & Rescue in the 1970s. He was a long time Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts in NJ. In PA, he was a volunteer for the Bald Eagle Mountain Megatransect Trail Race, and a school bus aide. Ken was also a designer, builder, and handyman for family, friends and coworkers.
When he wasn’t working or volunteering, Ken enjoyed singing in community choral groups, as well as singing little ditties whenever the mood would strike. He also played the harmonica, was an avid reader, did counted cross-stitch, and was the jigsaw puzzle master. Ken had a special place in his heart for dogs, knowing the names of all the dogs in the neighborhood, and frequently donated to the ASPCA.
He is survived by his children, David of Torrington, CT, Phyllis Martin-Borrero and her husband Henry of Stewartsville, NJ, Denise Maura of Wethersfield, CT, Kenneth of Plymouth, MI, son-in-law Kevin Scotti of Granby, CT, and five grandchildren; Jessica Maura, Thomas and Elizabeth Scotti, and Henry and Felicia Martin-Borrero. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years Margaret (Sullivan) Martin, daughter Susan, and 5 siblings; Robert Chamberlain, Edith Eldridge, Ruth Ellmer, John Martin, and Grace Woody.
The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers of Luther Ridge Assisted Living, Wadsworth Glen Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Athena Home Health & Hospice, and special thanks to Millicent Malcolm, APRN for her gentle care and kindness.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 10:00am at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic, CT.
