Ruth M. Still

Ruth Marie (Wight) Still, 101, of Windham passed away November 13, 2015. She was born July 9, 1914 in Norwich CT. She was the daughter of Howard and Clara (Wuttkey) Wight. Until her marriage to Clarence Still, Ruth lived in Sprague on what is now known as Woodland Lane. She attended Hanover School and Norwich Free Academy. During her childhood and young adult years she enjoyed life "on the farm". Prior to her marriage in 1939 she worked for Peck McWilliams in Norwich as an office clerk. When she returned to work in the 1950's she worked at and later retired from American Optical in Norwich. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Nancy Thorpe and son-in-law Charles of Colchester, Ct; two grandsons and their wives Charles and Harriet Thorpe of Boston, MA and Sprague Ct., and Brian and Julie Thorpe, and great-granddaughter Aden Rebecca Thorpe, all of Cranston RI. She and her brother Myron, predeceased, were extremely close throughout their lives. Other survivors include nieces Ruth Tefft of Sprague, Eleanor Wight of West Hartford and nephews Merrit Wight of Mashpee MA., Walter and Ralph Greenhalgh of Hanover and their extended families. During her adult life Ruth lived close to her family in Sprague, and in Norwich. In her last years she resided at St. Joseph's Living Center in Windham CT. Ruth was a lifetime member of the Hanover Congregational Church. Supporting her church and local charities was a priority, generously contributing her time, handmade goods, and flowers from her garden in addition to regular contributions. Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be remembered for living and teaching life's most important lessons through her daily examples. Her wisdom will be sorely missed. A funeral service will be held Sunday, November 15, 2015. The family will receive friends and relatives at 1:00 PM with the service to start at 2:00 PM at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. Willimantic, Ct (Rte. 195) with a burial at Hanover Cemetery to follow.
