Roy S. Campbell

Roy Evelyn Stallings Campbell, 94, of Storrs, died on January 25, 2015, at the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, in Storrs. She was born in 1920 in Fruitdale, Alabama, to John Howard and Carrie Stallings. Roy always loved books, movies and the theater. She worked as a librarian for many years. She acted and directed in numerous college and community theater productions. Roy graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1940 and, after moving home to work and save money, moved to New York City with dreams of becoming a professional actress. While there, she worked as a reference librarian at the New York Public Library and volunteered with the American Theatre Wing and at various theaters. She also co-authored a well-regarded theater treatise, A Guide To Theatre Reading, (National Theatre Conference, 1949) with Paul Myers. After briefly working at the Knoxville, TN, library, she accepted a job as librarian at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Hampton, Virginia. There, she met George Campbell. They were married in 1951. They moved to California in 1953. She was a regular contributor to the book section of the Pasadena Star News. Roy and George had two children and in 1963 moved to Storrs. Besides her husband George Campbell Roy is survived by her sons, John Campbell and his wife, Leslie Muzingo, of Mobile, AL and Robert Campbell and his wife Judy Wakefield Campbell, of Willington, CT, her nieces Nancy Ogles Johnson and Rebecca Ogles Tanton, and her nephew Paul Ogles, Jr. The funeral service will be held at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic, CT, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2015. A private burial will follow as weather permits.
