Roger Abare Obituary
Roger L. Abare passed away with his family by his side, on Saturday August 24th at the age of 91.

Roger was born in Burlington, Vermont to Leslie and Bernice (McGivern) Abare. He lost his father at an early age and eventually he and his siblings moved to Willimantic, CT with his mother. He attended St. Joseph’s School and graduated from Windham High School in 1951. He was the loving husband to Rose (Lobosco), who predeceased him.

He joined the Navy after high school and served for 4 years, allowing him to see the world. Upon his return to Willimantic, he became a barber which he continued for many years, including owning his own shop. He also worked in pharmacy/retail management before moving on to serve as Willimantic’s City Clerk and Treasurer.  He also was a city alderman for many years. He finished off his career working in the town’s Building Department. He was especially proud of his time representing ACSME union both locally and at the state level.  When he retired on June 16 1997, the town of Windham declared it Roger Abare Day, in recognition of his dedication to the city of Willimantic and the town of Windham.

He was a lifetime member of the Willimantic Elks, and the VFW. He was also proud of the extensive family tree research he and his siblings accomplished which aided in him becoming a Son of the Revolution member.

He and Rose moved from Willimantic to Lebanon once they become empty nesters. He enjoyed golfing with his friend Dave, fishing with his brother Les and most of all spending time with family. He was loved by both immediate and extended family for his compassion, wit and humor. After Rose’s passing, he moved to Danielson to be closer to his daughters, where he made new friends and enjoyed time with his family. In 2021, he moved in with his daughter JoAnn and her husband Bucky where he resided until earlier this year, when he went to live at Matulaitis Nursing Home. He quickly became a favorite there, making friends with residents and staff. He was known as the man with a joke for everyone he spoke with each day.

We want to thank all the staff at Matulaitis Nursing Home for their excellent care and compassion towards dad, and especially for making him feel at home.

Roger was predeceased by his parents, his wife Rose, his siblings Sheila, June, Peg, Leslie and their spouses. His in-laws, including Ed and Fran Czelusniak whom he was especially close to. Also, by 3 nephews, Joe, Bob and Tom, and his son in law Scott.

He is survived by his daughter Connie and Art Burdick and daughter JoAnn and Bucky Lohbusch, grandchildren Joshua (Marissa), Shane (Danielle), John (Stephanie), Chris and Sarah. He also leaves great grandchildren Benjamin, Annalise, Emerson, Parker, Adeline, Riker, Paxton, Sophia, Aubrey, Logan and Aden.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CreatiVets for wounded veterans at 672A Westboro Dr. Nashville, TN 37203 (or online at CreatiVets.org) or to Matulaitis Donation Fund (note for resident activities) 10 Thurber Rd., Putnam Ct 06260.

There are no services, and burial will be private.
