Robert E. "Mac" Mccarthy Iii

Robert Emmet McCarthy III, "Mac", of Windham, was born on June 4th, 1936 in Holyoke MA and went to heaven on June 23rd 2014. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mary Margaret McCarthy. He moved from Holyoke to Willimantic in 8th grade. He attended St. Joseph's Elementary School and graduated from Windham High School with the class of 1955. He studied at St. Anselm College and served with the U.S. Army in Korea. Part of his job in Special Services was to play baseball and entertain the troops. His bat was heard all across Asia. Once home in Willimantic he continued to play baseball and fast pitch softball for many years. He began his career at Plastic Wire & Cable and later became a supervising inspector for Underwriters Laboratories, from where he retired. An avid sports enthusiast, Mac was a trivia buff and enjoyed keeping up on high school, college, and professional sports. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events and concerts. He loved his family gatherings, especially the annual vacation on Cape Cod. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, eating out and lifelong friends. His sister in law and brother in law, Kathleen and Ralph Makoul held a special place in his heart. Ralph was often referred to as Mac's 'Partner in Crime'. He was a founding member of the Irish Club of Willimantic and held the office of Treasurer for many years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Mary (Moran) McCarthy, his children Meg & John Gustafson of Columbia, Kevin & Patti McCarthy of Cazenovia, NY, and Katie & Sean Cox of Columbia; his treasured grandchildren Caitryn & Johnny Gustafson, his namesake Robert McCarthy, and Patrick, Olivia & Allison Cox along with countless friends and family who were blessed to know him. Mac took a deep breath and hit his last home run. He's home forever now with his loving parents and beloved uncle, Abbot Gerald McCarthy, OSB. His family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday June 26, 2014 between 6:00 and 8:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9:00am at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St. Willimantic, with assembly at the church. Private Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made on Mac's behalf to a charity that was close to his heart: Adoption Program, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Norwich,331 Main Street, Norwich, CT 06360.
