Robert Shawn Burgess, 56, of Willimantic, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025, surrounded by the comforting embrace of his loving family after bravely battling pancreatic cancer for two and a half years. Known to many as Rob, and Shawn to his family, Robert’s life was a testament to love, strength and unwavering dedication to those he held dear. He will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known his calming presence and quiet generosity.
Robert Shawn was born on July 24, 1968, in Middletown, CT, the cherished son of Margaret Burgess and the late Robert Burgess. As the only son in the family, Shawn grew up alongside his sisters, Valerie Grant and Heidi Caruso, with a childhood filled of adventure. He and his older sister, Valerie, would ride bikes all day along with their neighborhood friends and were determined to dig their way to China. Shawn never left out his younger sister, Heidi, letting her play with his racetracks and allowing her to tag along on his fishing adventures, carrying his tackle box everywhere he went and eventually teaching her the peaceful craft of fishing.
In 2007, Rob married the love of his life, Denise-the moment he described as his proudest achievement. His devotion to Denise resonated deeply, and she lovingly referred to him as her superhero. In their 22 years together, the couple built a profound and enduring bond, enjoying simple yet meaningful moments and making memories wherever they went. They often spent time at home gathering up Robert’s step children, Lee, Lindsay and Alexander and grandchildren Julian, Kierce and Kiana for a family picnic, always inviting Rob’s closest friend Paul, as they exchanged fishing stories or work happenings, his best bud never missed a moment to spend time with Rob during his illness. They cherished their days strolling through Harkness Memorial Park or escaping together to the Pocono Mountains, where they both enjoyed riding horseback and taking in the quiet beauty of nature.
Professionally, Rob proudly worked as a fishmonger at The Fish Market for over fifteen years, becoming deeply respected and beloved by his community. He took immense pride in his work, cultivating relationships through kindness and warmth, prompting customers to often refer to him fondly as “their favorite person.” Rob’s kindness was apparent in every interaction; friends frequently remarked on his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, and his one-of-a-kind laugh could lighten the burdens of anyone around.
Always prioritizing family time, Rob faithfully made weekly calls to his mother, Margaret, ensuring they had the chance to discuss their week, share laughs over their favorite sitcom, and maintain their close bond despite life’s busyness.
Robert’s courageous battle with pancreatic cancer showed everyone around him the true meaning of bravery and dignity. Even during the most challenging days, the strength of his character shone through-his gentle humor, remarkable determination, and enduring grace inspiring us all. Our deepest gratitude goes to Pastor Jim Mercurio, whose spiritual guidance and unwavering emotional support provided comfort during these challenging times. Denise and family would like to thank the Fish Market and all of its customers for their friendship, comfort and support.
