Richard Thomas Ward, 44, of Willimantic, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2016. He is survived by his mother Catherine Davoll Ward, his father David Robert Ward, and his brother James Ward. He was a beautiful little blond haired blue eyed boy who came from a very painful beginning. His mother and family did the best they could to give him the love he needed. After years of struggle this had truly been Rich?s ?turn around? year. He had been building a hopeful future connecting in a loving way with the people close to him and almost obtaining the goal of an apartment. These words from people who shared Richard?s journey say a great deal about the man he was: Kimberly Clark Interim Director of the Soup Kitchen: ?Richard was a long time guest and volunteer who took care of all types of chores often helping when it was needed. Most mornings he would come in early to help make breakfast for our guests for no gain other than the satisfaction of helping.? Shirley Surette Soup Kitchen Manager: ?Rich was like a s?more: hard on the outside?sweet & mushy on the inside. Always lending a helping hand. Peace is finally his.? Avery Lenhart No Freeze Shelter Case Worker and dear friend: Even though Rich endured many struggles in his life, he knew how important it was to love and to be loved. He was a loyal and protective friend who spoke fondly of those to whom he was close. He was eager to offer a helping hand whenever anyone needed one, whether to clear driveways or cars of snow, do yard work, or do heavy lifting for someone in need. Rich took pride in being among the first to swim across the river in February for the Covenant Soup Kitchen's Plunge for Hunger and he volunteered to cook breakfasts at the soup kitchen on a regular basis. He loved animals and nature and especially loved to go see the beavers and great blue herons while walking long distances along the Airline Trail. Rev. Jaclyn Sheldon Saint Paul?s Episcopal Church: Rich was a dearly loved member of our worshipping family. He helped may in many ways especially cooking breakfasts on Sundays. We were blessed to walk with him and be part of his spiritual journey over the last six years. He always cared deeply about our family and he loved God and knew the Scriptures. We are glad he is resting in the embrace of our Lord, finally safe and home forever.
