Richard George Steg

Richard Steg, 80, of Storrs/Mansfield, died Friday, April 27, 2018 with both of his sons by his side. He was born in New York City on June 23, 1937 to Jacob Steg and Elizabeth Domonkos. After serving in the Marines, Richard earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Connecticut. He married Mae Berube of Chaplin Connecticut in 1965. Richard and Mae lived in Storrs, Montreal, New Hampshire, and Richard ultimately retired back to Storrs. Richard spent his career working in physics and engineering, in the process he invented and developed new products and technologies in particle detection, defect detection, optics and thermodynamics. While working at McGill University in Montreal, he led multiple research expeditions to the Arctic. He had a lifelong passion for fundamental physics and astrophysics. Richard designed and built a home in Storrs and a solar home in New Hampshire. In his free time, Richard enjoyed traveling, hiking in the mountains, sailing, playing the game Go and playing the violin in community theater. Richard is survived by two children: Michael Steg of Union City New Jersey and Stephen Steg of Erie Colorado;?four grandchildren Jacob, Mason, Leila and Grace. Richard?s family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday May 2, 2018 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic, with a Funeral Service beginning at 11:00am at the Funeral Home. Burial to follow at Storrs Cemetery.
