Richard Spellman Obituary
Randy (Richard Andrew) Spellman, beloved husband of Jenny (Contos) for 25 years and loving father of Ryan and Luke, died on Friday, June 28, 2024 at the age of 50. It was a sudden and tragic passing, which has left a deep void in the lives of many. He is the son of Paula Goyette and Richard E. Spellman (wife Mary). Randy is also survived by his sister, Susan Olbrias, brother-in-law, Charlie Olbrias, sister-in-law, Kathy (Contos) Di Garbo and her husband, Joe, nieces Olivia and Madison Olbrias, and Melina and Eva Di Garbo, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He had close relationships with his family members, including his parents-in-law, Christopher and MaryAnn Contos, Jenny's grandmother, Anne Dobrolet, and with many dear friends.
Randy was born on March 3, 1974 and raised in Willimantic. He graduated from Windham High School in 1992 and from the University of Connecticut in 1997. With his Bachelor of Science degree in cytogenetics, he began working at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, before working as a laboratory scientist at Pfizer in Groton, Connecticut, for the past 23 years.
While he studied at UConn and afterward, Randy worked as a personal care attendant for his late brother-from-another-mother, Jason Pisano. He assisted in Jay's training and was his guide runner for an impressive number of marathons, including Boston and New York. Randy valued connecting with nature and animals (we call him the dog-whisperer), and could always provide a good "dad joke". He was artistically creative, enjoyed wood-burning, drawing, and painting, and passed these talents, as well as his intelligence and sense of humor, on to his sons. He created beautiful handmade gifts for Jenny and their boys for every milestone and celebration. He was fun and adventurous, and loved his family fiercely. His proudest moments were watching his boys grow up, participate in sports, drama, music, and attain incredible academic achievements. Family game nights, playing catch, and cycling many miles on Cape Cod trails were simple but treasured family pastimes. Randy's friendships were deep, some established in childhood and lasted his lifetime. While these words only begin to capture the essence of Randy, we ask that you plant a tree, pet a dog, paint a picture, run a marathon, ride a bike, and hug your kids as
you remember him.
Calling hours will be held at Church of the Holy Family, 185 Church Street, Hebron, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 9:30 am, followed by a funeral mass at 11:30 am. A burial will immediately follow at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Route 31, Coventry.
