Richard W. Schenk, 78, of Old Kings Highway, Hampton, husband of Barbara (Bermingham) Schenk, died Monday Sept. 3, 2001 at the Windham Hospital. He was born Feb. 25, 1923 in Springfield, MA. the son of Otto Maximillian Schenk and Ruth Evangeline (Avery) Schenk. He was a World War 2 Army veteran and took part in the D Day Invasion, landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy. He went on to fight in Germany and later met and married in wife Barbara in England, near the end of the war. He was a well known fisherman, hunter and sportsman who devoted many years to the area youth as chief instructor in wildlife conservation and firearm safety for the DEP. Mr. Schenk was an instructor for the NRA, a member of the Pomfret Rod & Gun Club, a member of the Hampton School Board for 10 years and a founder of the Ct. Horse Trails Assoc. He was also a member of the Willington VFW. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son Richard M. Schenk of Hampton, 3 daughters Debbie Moshier of Hampton, Judith Bird of Burlington, Christine Schenk-Brangi of Killingworth, a sister Sabra Knight of Niantic, a brother Douglas C. Schenk of Monson, MA., 6 grandchildren; Emily, Alex, Tess, Samuel, Alyssa and Jillian and 2 nieces. He was predeceased by a sister Maxine Schenk. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte.. 195) Willimantic on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00pm. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11:00am in the North Cemetery, Hammond Hill Rd., Hampton, with military honors. Please omit flowers.
